(May 8, 2020) - The Department of Health and Human Services on May 8 announced (2020 WL 2217398) an interim final rule amending several Medicare policies to cover COVID-19 testing.

The change recognizes the “critical importance” of increased testing during the pandemic and allows authorized health care professionals to order Food and Drug Administration-authorized diagnostic, serological and antibody tests.
The rule also amends some Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services rules to expand testing to such places as teaching hospitals, opioid treatment programs, long-term care hospitals, medical equipment suppliers and health clinics.
