Predicting Africa’s next refugee crisis using artificial intelligence

Thomson Reuters Labs™ around the world collaborate with customers to solve big problems and rapidly prototype and validate solutions using data science and review techniques.

Those problems cover a range of topics that sit at the heart of regulation and commerce — from criminal justice reform to modern slavery, from land rights in Africa to the fight against corruption.

Babusi Nyoni, Senior UX Designer for our lab in Cape Town, recently presented at TedxCapeTown, to discuss his work that used data sets from the World Bank (such as population growth, extreme weather conditions and GDP growth) to identify interesting patterns when countries had reached tipping points that led to mass migrations.

Babusi explains how using artificial intelligence and a wealth of data in new ways could help map the way forward for Africa.
