Release: More than 20 Global Business and Civil Society Leaders Urge European Union to Step Up Its Ambition on Climate

4 October 2018

Today, more than 20 business and civil society leaders, working with The B Team, have sent a strong message to the European Union: it’s time to step up ambition on climate. These Leaders, including Paul Polman, Sir Richard Branson, Oliver Bäte, Emmanuel Faber, Isabelle Kocher, and Former President of Ireland Mary Robinson, have sent a letter to the EU’s Environment Ministers stressing the imperative of increasing ambition on climate action, and asking them to revise their 2030 and 2050 targets in line with net-zero by 2050 at the latest.

This call to action adds to the growing movement of business leaders, such as the Prince of Wales’s Corporate Leaders Group, who recognise the urgency, but also the opportunity to build a greener and more prosperous Europe for all its citizens.

In the words of Paul Polman, CEO of Unilever and Chair of The B Team, at September’s One Planet Summit,

“These are big challenges that nobody can do alone. We’re not going at the scale and speed needed. We need more courage.”

Please find the letter in full here in case it may be helpful for reporting in the lead up to the EU Environment Council.
